Elijah and Despair

The prophet Elijah lived long ago

under the wicked king Ahab

and his queen Jezebel.

Elijah spoke out against the king

and the prophets of false gods

Jezebel had brought to the land.

But Elijah became disheartened,

and in fear he ran away,

and ran and ran and ran –

ending in his despair in a cave.

But God found Elijah in his cave –

and Elijah heard the still, small whisper

he knew was God.

And God told Elijah to get up,

to go on – he was not alone –

there were others

who had not worshipped the idols,

others who still knew God. (1 Kings 19)

Today I feel despair,

living under the rule of a regime

that puts children in cages,

and locks up desperate refugees.

A regime that redistributes wealth to the wealthy,

stealing from the poor,

whose lies are more common than truth –

A regime supported by false prophets

who quote scripture while hurting the poor,

and have sold their souls for power.

But God finds me,

in my cave of despair.

And I encounter the still voice of God there.

Get up, he says, and go on –

you are not alone,

there are others who have not

sold their souls and worshipped the idols;

there are others who care –

for the poor, the sick, and the elderly,

and the stranger among us.

There are still those who love.

Troubled Dreams

I close my eyes, I try to sleep, but then I dream.

My dreams are troubled,

peopled by the faces of little children held in cages.

I hear the sound of their wailing, of callous guards mocking them.

I see arrogant men saying these little children are dangerous,

that taking them from their parents is biblical.

But I know better. I know Jesus said “Suffer the little children to come unto me.”

and held them on his lap.

I know Paul really said, “I will show you a more excellent way”, the way of love.

I dream that I am a mother making a long, difficult journey

from a land of violence, a land of fear.

I have heard the United States is different, that people here don’t live in fear.

I walk with my little child over mountains, cross rivers, and finally – miracle!

I reach the border. I walk up to the guard,

I do not attempt to cross illegally – I want a land where I can live safely.

I ask for asylum.

But then, I am confused.

someone takes my child away – and they lock me up.

But I was seeking asylum! I was seeking safety.

Now my nights are troubled – in my dreams I hear her crying.

No one can tell me where my child is. I call her name but no one answers.

And then I wake, I am not that sleepless mother, I am not that wailing child –

but Jesus said, “What you have done to the least of these, my children, you have done to me.” (Matthew 25)

God help us all!

One Little Candle

So much darkness, all around – like a dark cave below the ground, so much fear, hate, and greed so few people care. So dark that I despair.

I cannot see my way! I cannot possibly light it all, My little light cannot chase away all the fear, all the racism, all the hate, all the deep darkness.

But Christ is the true light – it is his light that will someday light the hearts of all God’s loved children. Heart by heart and day by day, he will chase all the darkness away.

He says to me – Do not despair, do not lose hope – chasing away all the darkness, is not your job, it is for me.

He calls me, to light my one little candle, in my own little corner – to light what I can, where I can, to speak up for the oppressed, to call out the ethnocentricity of false religion, to love those I can reach, and trust Him to light the rest.

Join me – light your candle with love, and together, we will light a greater corner, overcome a little more of the darkness. Where there is love, there is hope, faith, and joy.

Advent – Beginning

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2

Come, Lord Jesus, come – we walk in darkness. If ever we needed your light, it is now, in this time.

We walk in the darkness of hate, bigotry, and racism. Bring your light of love into our hearts.

We walk in the darkness of greed, neglecting the poor, the hungry. Bring a spark – light a fire of mercy in our hearts.

We walk in the darkness of despair – as evil seems to win and evil claims your holy name. Bring the star of hope – light our way out of the darkness; guide our steps to the manger.

On the Lord’s Prayer

Father/Mother/Creator of us all – You who reaches farther than the farthest galaxy, and are nearer than the very air we breathe – Your very name is beyond our grasp, and yet You love us still.

May your Kingdom rule our hearts, with love, hope, faith, mercy, and kindness – in this troubled time and in this place, this earth – May we all live in your will, your love, loving our neighbors, just as you love.

May all humankind have food to fill their need, and our need, for this day – Forgive us when we forget that it is our responsibility to feed the hungry, clothe the needy – to do your will.

Forgive us all our disconnection from you, forgive us our anger, our fear, our narrow-mindedness – and help us to learn to forgive others.

Lead us away from those sins of hate, fear, anger, narrow-minded exclusion, of thinking first of self – Deliver us, and lead us away from all such evil, and into your will.

For only You have the power to overcome, only You can rule Your Kingdom on earth – Only You have the Glory. Amen.

Seashore

Sweeping vistas, sky and sea

Soothing sound of surf striking shore

Scarlet kite, soaring, swooping

Scent of coconut oil –

Sun worshippers basking

Sandcastles of yesterday

Swept away in the surf

Squealing youngsters dipping toes

My soul finds peace

in this moment.

2017 – A Lament

How long, O Lord?” And he said, “Until cities lie waste without inhabitant, and houses without people, and the land is utterly desolate.” (Isaiah 6:11)

2017 – History will record a year of desolation – disaster upon disaster, desolation upon desolation.

The first disaster was the election – yielding to their worst human sins: fear, hate, and greed; the people elected an unqualified man, an egotist, a narcissist who cannot stand to be questioned, cannot be wrong, to the presidency. He took office in January.

After that – I may get things wrong chronologically – I have reeled from the impacts. There was Charlottesville, where the sin of racism raised its head. Growing up in the South, I thought we had moved past that – so much for progress!

Then the hurricanes – disaster had names: Harvey flooded Texas, Irma created destruction up Florida, all the way to North Georgia – twelve elderly people died in Miami – but Irma caused most damage in Big Pine Key, a place dear to my heart! The President was busy fighting with football players, while Maria wiped out much of Puerto Rico – the death toll there is now past 49 – and the President threw paper towels at survivors.

In what was a human-created disaster, a man shooting from a hotel window killed 58 people, injured more than 500. This disaster was caused by the sin, not just of total egotism, which is idolatry, and of the murder that rose from it, but of the greed of a nation that refuses to put reasonable limits on automatic weapons.

And then, California, a death toll still climbing, thousands of homes destroyed by fires that sweep across the hills, powered by Santa Ana winds.

Overseas – we hardly noticed, being so engulfed in our own disasters – earthquakes in Mexico killing hundreds, mudslides in Sierra Leone, flooding and landslides in Peru, damage to other island nations from Maria, a hurricane called Ophelia in Ireland – they don’t have hurricanes in Ireland  – and the continuing flood of refugees, fleeing war, drought, and famine.

This earth cries out in agony and pain – so many people hurting, so many people have lost their homes, have lost loved ones – what can we do? Where can we look for hope? for help?

“The Lord is my Shepherd”, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.”

God does not send the disasters, nor does God keep them away; but God walks through them with us. God sends helpers – the firemen fighting the fires in California, some even as their own homes burned, the neighbors helping one another on Big Pine Key; the volunteers going to places of disaster. When you want to find God in a disaster, look for the helpers!

“And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20b)

A Prayer – for Love

Prayer – for Love

Lord of life and hope and faith and love,

Help me to live – in the sureness of your presence.

Help me to live – in the certainty of your love.

Help me to know – that I am lovable, because you have shown me that I am loved.

And then – help me to love.

Help me to love – family, friends, neighbors

Help me to love – the poor, the outcast, the alien in our midst

Help me to love – as you have loved me.

Help me to see – through your eyes of love

Help me to love – with your heart of love

That I may love – even the unlovable

For through your eyes, and your heart, all are lovable.

You are loved

You are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter who you are – whether you are born in the USA, or in Mexico, Central America, or Africa, or the Middle East, or on an island – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter what you look like – whatever your skin color, your hair color; whether you look like the world’s standard of beauty, or not – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter if you are wealthy or very poor, living in a mansion or a tent or on the street – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter if you are a refugee or an immigrant – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter if you are married, single, widowed, divorced, gay, lesbian, or straight – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter if you are male, female, or transgender – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

No matter what religion you profess or deny, still – you are loved – you are beautiful – you are a child of God and you matter!

God’s love is not conditional; God’s love is not exclusive. Every human being is made in the image of God, is loved by God, is a child of God, is beautiful, and matters!

Summer Poems

Some new poems for the summer:

Raining Grace

Grace is to my soul

as the slow steady rain is

to the parched and arid

landscape of drought –

soaking in,

turning the brown grass green,

making flowers bloom,

softening the baked soil

of pain, betrayal, and doubt.

Grace, rain down on me!

Holiday With a Friend

A hike through the woods

a walk on the beach

a swim, a soak

a great meal

but most of all

time with a friend

good conversation

being together –

makes a good day!

Do You See Me?

How often we fail – to really see the people:

She poured your coffee sought to please –

did you see her, did you look in her eyes,

call her by name?

He bagged your groceries, took them to your car –

did you see him, did you look in his eyes,

did you thank him?

She saved your life, but you didn’t know –

she arrested that drunk driver who would have hit you.

Do you thank them, those who enforce the law,

and keep you safe?

You crossed over, walked on the other side of the road –

averted your eyes, to avoid seeing him,

that homeless man on the park bench.

Did you even see him, did you look in his eyes,

did you even say hello?

The young man asked Jesus, “Who is my neighbor?”

Who is mine? Who is yours?
