One Little Candle

So much darkness, all around – like a dark cave below the ground, so much fear, hate, and greed so few people care. So dark that I despair.

I cannot see my way! I cannot possibly light it all, My little light cannot chase away all the fear, all the racism, all the hate, all the deep darkness.

But Christ is the true light – it is his light that will someday light the hearts of all God’s loved children. Heart by heart and day by day, he will chase all the darkness away.

He says to me – Do not despair, do not lose hope – chasing away all the darkness, is not your job, it is for me.

He calls me, to light my one little candle, in my own little corner – to light what I can, where I can, to speak up for the oppressed, to call out the ethnocentricity of false religion, to love those I can reach, and trust Him to light the rest.

Join me – light your candle with love, and together, we will light a greater corner, overcome a little more of the darkness. Where there is love, there is hope, faith, and joy.

Advent – Beginning

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.” Isaiah 9:2

Come, Lord Jesus, come – we walk in darkness. If ever we needed your light, it is now, in this time.

We walk in the darkness of hate, bigotry, and racism. Bring your light of love into our hearts.

We walk in the darkness of greed, neglecting the poor, the hungry. Bring a spark – light a fire of mercy in our hearts.

We walk in the darkness of despair – as evil seems to win and evil claims your holy name. Bring the star of hope – light our way out of the darkness; guide our steps to the manger.
